What to expect at a pelvic floor assessment.
An honest, plain-language walkthrough so nothing is a surprise on the table.
Your first visit is more than the exam.
A pelvic floor evaluation is a 60-minute visit. The exam itself is one small part of it. We start with a conversation about your history, symptoms, and goals. Then a posture and movement assessment. The pelvic floor exam, if appropriate and consented to, comes later, and it is optional.
What the exam actually includes.
A pelvic floor exam can be external only, or it can include an internal vaginal or rectal assessment if clinically useful. Internal exams are done with a single gloved, lubricated finger to feel the pelvic floor muscles, assess tone, coordination, and any tender areas. There is no speculum. There is no instrumentation. It is brief and informational.
When an internal exam helps.
An internal exam is offered when it would meaningfully inform your treatment. For some conditions (chronic pelvic pain, painful intercourse, prolapse, post-prostatectomy recovery), an internal assessment provides information that an external exam cannot. For other concerns, external assessment is often enough.
Consent is not a formality.
I explain every part of the exam before we do it. You can say no. You can stop at any time. You can choose to skip the internal portion entirely. You can choose to come back to it on a later visit. Your comfort is the priority, every step of the way.
Common questions.
Do I have to get an internal exam?
Is it painful?
Can I bring a support person?
What should I wear?
Hi, I am Dr. Bethany Reuter.
I started Enhance PT because I was tired of watching patients get rushed through their care. After years in traditional clinics, I knew there was a better way to practice physical therapy. One where the person on the table actually came first.
I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy with advanced training in pelvic health, orthopedics, dry needling, visceral manipulation, and concussion rehabilitation. I treat every client like the only client on my schedule, because for that hour, they are.
If you have been brushed off, told to just live with it, or shuffled between providers who do not talk to each other, I want you to know there is another path. And I would be honored to walk it with you.
